Social Studies: Goods and Services

Almost everyone needs goods and services. People use money and trade for goods and services that they want or need.

Goods are things that are made or grown. Some goods are made, such as clothes, computers, and cars. Other goods are grown such as fruits and vegetables. All goods are made from natural resources. This does not mean that the good is a natural resource. For example, a table may be made from the wood of a tree. While the tree is a natural resource, the table would not be a natural resource.
Some of the goods that are made in the United States are sent to other countries. Those goods are called exports. Some goods are made in other countries and are shipped to the United States. These goods are called imports.

A service is work that someone does for someone else. A doctor and police are people who provide services. Some services are paid for by taxes, or money paid to the government. Taxes pay people like public school teachers and police officers for their services. Other services are not paid for with taxes. These services include lawn care, hair salons, and taxi drivers.

People that make goods are called producers, because they make or produce goods. People that purchase goods and services are called consumers. Many people are both producers and consumers. Producers depend on consumers to purchase their products. This allows them to make a profit. Consumers depend on producers to make the goods that they want and need. This is called interdependence.

After reading the text and looking at the 2 world maps, answer the following prompt.  Goods and Services are sent from the United States all over the world.  Do you think that the United States is dependent on imports from other continents?  Why or why not?

  1. The United states depends on imports and exports. We actually provide imports and exports. We provide 59% of imports and exports. We also need what other countries provide We need the plastic and rubber from Bolivia. Bolivia needs our transportation, our chemicals, and our machinery. We need vegetables from Brazil. Brazil needs our transportation, our chemicals, and our machinery. We need metal from Nigeria. Nigeria needs our chemicals, and our minerals. We need exports and other countries need our imports. The United states depends on imports and exports and other countries do to. Aiden B.

  2. Does America depend on imports from other countries? Yes, America does and other countries depend on us. If we didn’t have transportation, rubber, and chemicals than our economy would basically fall apart. People need the goods to live and some people need to sell them to make enough money to buy the stuff to live. America does depend on the imports from the countries around us. 3. Yes, I think The United States does depend on other goods from all over the globe. Like South America we get cocoa beans from them. That is how we make chocolate. That is one of our imports in The United States. Imports are something we get. Exports are things we give to other countries.

America gets metals from Mexico and we get chemicals from Europe. These are imports. Here are some exports The United States gives Europe materials and vehicles and a lot of countries use The United States Chemicals. The United States is a producer for many things. If other countries didn't have what we made. We could not survive if we didn't didn't get products from other countries.

Other countries need things from The United States. It is like an food chain if one thing is missing it all won't work it will all collapse. That is why it is why The United States and other countries depend on each others things.By : Brady 1/27/16
